Labour pledges 'iron-clad' support for Ukraine
Shadow ministers say party would stand up to Russia in government
Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has visited Kyiv to meet President Zelensky
Britain's opposition Labour Party has affirmed its "iron-clad" commitment to Ukraine during a visit to Kyiv on Monday by the party's foreign and defence spokesmen.
Shadow foreign secretary David Lammy and shadow defence secretary John Healey said a Labour government would "stand up to Russia" and provide "whatever support is necessary" to Ukraine.
"We are here today to send a clear message: the Labour Party stands with Ukraine," Lammy said. "We are committed to doing everything we can to help Ukraine win this war and rebuild its country."
Healey added: "Russia's aggression must not be allowed to succeed. We will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes to ensure that it emerges from this conflict as a free and independent nation."
The Labour Party's visit to Kyiv comes as the war in Ukraine enters its fourth month. The conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced and thousands killed.
The Labour Party has been critical of the Conservative government's response to the war in Ukraine. The party has called for more military support for Ukraine and for tougher sanctions on Russia.
